Consultation
The Center provides consultation to the military health system and local, state and national leaders and organizations on the psychological and behavioral effects of exposure to extreme environments, disaster, terrorism and war. The Center’s scientific and public health consultations draw upon 20 years of scholarship, research and on-the-ground experience with military and civilian populations, disaster victims and their families, first responders, body handlers and healthcare and public health providers and planners. These events have included airplane disasters, earthquakes, hurricanes, typhoons, embassy bombings, terrorist attacks including the USS Cole, 9/11, the anthrax and sniper attacks, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and the Southeast Asian Tsunami.
The Center provided post 9/11 consultation to the New York State Governor’s Office, New York City Mayor’s Office, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Capital response teams, the US Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of State, Homeland Security’s Transportation Safety Division, the Carter Center, the World Bank, the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Department of Justice, Department of Veteran’s Affairs, The Red Cross, NATO, WHO, FBI, the US Senate, House of Representatives and Library of Congress Employee Assistance and Human Resources Departments, and private industry.
The Center’s experts deployed to Iraq to assess and help rebuild its mental health care system. At the request of the Army Surgeon General, Center experts have provided recommendations on medical ethics, war trauma and training needs of healthcare providers.
