Workplace

The impact of natural disasters and terrorism on our nation has drawn attention to the vulnerability of the workplace, and the importance of fostering and sustaining a workplace environment of safety, preparedness and health. A broad approach to workplace preparedness is needed that addresses behavioral risk management in planning for, responding to and recovering from critical events and disasters. This requires an integrated approach to crisis planning encompassing an organization’s security, human resources, occupational health and safety, employee assistance, and corporate communication.

The Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress (CSTS) has been addressing these issues since its establishment in 1987. This work has focused on the psychological effects and health consequences on individuals and groups exposed to extreme stress environments including weapons of mass destruction. The Center also addresses the role of disaster leadership, organizational function and recovery from extreme stress, and individual performance and resumption of work after disasters.

The Center is currently engaged in research, education and consultation to employers and workplace health providers in the public and private sector focused on planning for and responding to critical incidents, disaster and terrorism, and the threat of public health epidemics such as Avian Flu.

The Center’s resources for workplace planning and response are extensive and include:
