CAPTAIN TRUEMAN W. SHARP

CAPT Trueman Winfield Sharp is currently the Chair of the Department of Military and Emergency Medicine in the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine in the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, MD.

CAPT Trueman Winfield Sharp received his BA from Haverford College and his MD degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1984. Captain Sharp completed a residency program in Preventive Medicine at the University of Washington School of Community Medicine and Public Health in 1987, which included a Masters in Public Health degree. Commander Sharp was Chief Resident in 1987.

Commander Sharp was Head, Epidemiology Department, U.S. Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine Unit Seven, Naples, Italy from 1989–92. He was assigned to the Infectious Disease Threat Assessment Program at the Naval Medical Research Institute, Bethesda, MD., from 1992–1994. Commander Sharp served as the Preventive Medicine Officer, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, from 1994 to 1997. He became the Officer-in-Charge of Naval Medical Research Center Detachment, Lima, Peru, from 1997–2000. During the course of these assignments, CDR Sharp served in Operation Sharp Edge in West Africa, Operation Provide Comfort in Northern Iraq, Operation Restore Hope in Somalia, and with the Marine Corps Chemical Biological Incident Response Force during the 1998 Olympic Games. CAPT Sharp was assigned to the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences from 2000–2002 as the Residency Director for General Preventive Medicine. He then served as the Commanding Officer, Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3, Cairo, Egypt, from 2002–2005.

CAPT Sharp's decorations include the Legion Merit (with one gold star), the Navy-Marine Corps Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal with three gold stars, the Army Commendation Medal, the Joint Unit Commendation, the Navy Unit Commendation, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Coast Guard Unit Commendation, the Navy/Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Ribbon, the Southwest Asia Service Medal with two bronze stars, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Navy-Marine Corps Overseas Deployment ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon with four bronze stars, and the Kuwait Liberation Medal.

CAPT Sharp’s published articles on infectious diseases in military forces and medical aspects of humanitarian assistance have appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and other journals.
